Home favourite Marcel Siem has progressed through to the Last 16 of the Paul Lawrie Match Play after beating Mikko Ilonen on Friday.

The 37-year-old produced a strong finish at Golf Resort Bad Griesbach to finish two up on his opponent, who came into the match in scintillating form following his 8&7 victory over Matthieu Pavon on Thursday.

Siem, a four-time winner on the European Tour, believes channelling his emotions in the right way was the key to his success against Ilonen, and he is hoping to continue in the same vein over the course of the weekend.

"I said to myself at the beginning of the week, 'I won four tournaments and a World Cup with my emotions'," Siem said. "I know some weeks they got in the way for me but I think to get back on track I need my emotions - that's me."

The German will face Belgium's Thomas Detry in the Last 16, after he beat Nacho Elvira of Spain 3&1.

Other notable winners on Friday were Alejandro Canizares, who saw off a spirited comeback from tournament host Lawrie to win 2&1, Johan Carlsson, who defeated top seed Matthew Southgate 4&2, and Alexander Knappe, who was a comfortable 5&4 victor over former Ryder Cup player Victor Dubuisson.
